The session was a great success and plans are in place to follow with further lessons next term. (26/03/2010)

Science Success

Congratulations to Lewis Acford, Abigail Hallum, Tomos Havard and Azizah Khan of 8PJJO, who won first prize at the “Salters’ Festival of Chemistry” at Cardiff University on the 24th of March. The pupils worked in the undergraduate research laboratories to carry out two investigations. The first investigation used forensic science techniques to work out which suspect had committed a crime, and the second investigation tested the pupil’s ability to carry out chemical reactions accurately. Schools from across Wales and England arrived to compete in this extremely popular festival, so well done to our More Able and Talented pupils, whose excellent teamwork skills and very accurate practical results led the University to award them the top prize. The pupils received both certificates and prizes for their efforts, and also won molecular modelling kits for the Science faculty worth over £100. (26/03/2010)

GCSE Art and Textiles students collaborate for Metro competition

Five girls in Year 10 are keeping their fingers crossed as they submit their entry into this years Metro Re-create competition. The competition is for students of Art or Textiles to create an innovative piece of work inspired by re-cycling newspapers. The competition has fantastic prizes; the first prize in each category being £750. Maria Muhmood, Ellie Kilberg, Hannah Roberts, Sara Rahman & Palvi Rupalia, chose the word FREE as their inspiration and have entered their costume into the Fashion and Jewellery section of the competition. It was difficult to complete the outfit during the four after-school sessions, but teamwork played an important part and each girl contributed to a different element of the design. I was impressed to see students from the two subjects working collaboratively; sharing their personal skills and wish them luck in the competition. St Cyres Annual Awards Evening

Pupils, parents, staff and Governors enjoyed a memorable evening at the St Cyres annual Awards Evening this week. During this important event, pupils were rewarded for the commitment, excellence and endeavor they have demonstrated in a number of different areas, from contributing to our school and local community to excellence in different subject areas.

Each department gave an award for excellence. These pupils received their awards from Deputy Headteacher Ms Hilary Thomas. Local businesses also supported the school by sponsoring awards and these included the J.M. Textiles Awards won by Naomi Lewis and Luke Penberthy of Year 7 and the Dragonfly Training Award won by Lucas Podesta.

The Friends of St Cyres recognised the contribution made to the school by Robert Edwards as a student who really is an inspiration to others. The David Davies Award for Endeavour was awarded to Pauline Alvarez in Year 10 and the Governors’ Award for ‘Most Improved Student’ went to Mikael Khalid.

One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation by Ron McLean, the Project Manager for the new school building. Ron gave an entertaining account of his career to date and gave some valuable advice to pupils on making key decisions in their future careers.

Speaking during the evening, Headteacher Mr Brian Lightman, said ‘Pupils have once again excelled themselves and provided role models for others to aspire to. It is a privilege to work with such highly motivated pupils and to share the delight of parents with whom we work throughout the year to ensure pupils fulfil their potential.’ (25/03/2010)

Would your family enjoy introducing someone from another country to your way of life?

There are international students from all over the world at universities in the UK. They speak English and most are in their 20's. They would love to spend a weekend sharing your family life. You could have fun introducing them to British food, customs, your local community and area and you could learn about their country and culture. This is an opportunity to make friends across international boundaries. Geography comes alive, and afterwards, any news bulletin about your guest's country will have much more meaning.

HOST is a national charity, backed by the Foreign Office, which has been linking students with volunteer hosts for many years. See www.hostuk.org or call Lynette Chappin, the voluntary organiser in South Wales, on 02920 693903. (18/03/2010)

The side, led by George Hooper, has subsequently beaten the representatives from St Joseph’s (Neath/Port Talbot) and Croesyceiliog (Cwmbran) in the national quarter-final. In the Cardiff Cup the boys squeezed past Llanishen 1-0 and were more comfortable against Mary immaculate in recording a 6-2 win. We have since met Cowbridge in the quarter-final and despite a patchy performance (2-1 win) we will now meet Fitzalan in the semi-final.
The other St Cyres squad blazing a trail this season is Nicky Coles’ first XI. The boys removed Whitchurch 3-2, St Teilo’s 2-0 and Radyr 5-3 before suffering a 5-2 reverse to Bishop of Llandaff in the final of the qualifying competition for the national play-offs. Happily, the champions and runners up represent Cardiff and the Vale in the National play-offs. St Cyres seniors have progressed to the quarter final following a successful (4-1) last 16 clash with Swansea’s Morriston Comprehensive School. We will meet Gwent champions St Albans of Pontypool in the next round. In the Cardiff Cup, wins against Barry 4-2 and an extra time, last gasp, 2-1 steal against Whitchurch High School have earned a Cardiff semi-final against Atlantic College.
The Year 7 (under12) squad, led by Regan Poole, has now exited both competitions at the hands of Llanishen and Cardiff High School following two wins against Barry 6-2 and Bishop of Llandaff 4-1.
At under 13 level, the Year 8 team captained by Harry Simpson has beaten Whitchurch high School 3-1 and Llanedeyrn High School 5-1 in the Cardiff Cup. Murder in the Library!
St Cyres Celebrates World Book Day

Competitions were held throughout World Book Day 4th March in the Learning Resources Centre. Pupils submitted entries for best book review and also designed their own book covers. The winning entries were by Angharad Webb Year 7 for her book review and Carys Inker for best book cover, congratulations and well done! The main event ‘Murder in the Library’, a book themed murder mystery, also took place in the LRC with scores of pupils from all years turning up to investigate the crime. Clues were to be found around the library and by the end of the day the case was solved. The winning ‘investigators’ were Sam Wiblin-Rowlands Year 8 and Ryan Morris Year 7, well done. (10/03/2010)

Success for St Cyres Young Writers

St Cyres pupils entered the Young Writers competition ‘Mini Sagas’ a creative writing competition held annually for school children throughout the UK. Entries are judged on use of imagination, perception, expression and creative use of language. We were delighted to recently receive a letter from Young Writers advising that no fewer than 100 of our pupils have had their work chosen to be published in the next book entitled ‘Mini Marvels South Wales’. Many congratulations to all pupils involved, this is an excellent achievement. (10/03/2010)

Marie Curie Annual Collection

The annual collection for the Marie Curie Hospice once again took place in the school and, after several weeks of anticiaption, was again organised by the Year 10 pupils who have supported the charity so readily since they joined in Year 7. The usual pupils were joined by Dina Ismail and Sahra Arwo and gave up every break and dinner time throughout the collecting week. The fund-raising culminated in the Eisteddfod on the Friday when every pupil in the Lower School was encouraged to purchase a daffodil to wear. The Year 10 pupils are indebted to the younger pupils from the Dinas Powys site for their help. The collecting tins and buckets were returned to Marie Curie by the Penarth students - shown in the photograph with Mrs Karen Jones and Ms Georgina Burke from the Fund Raising Office. (09/03/2010)

Fair Trade Tea-Shirt Competition

The winner of the Fair Trade Tea-Shirt Competition is Sarah King in 8CLB. Her winning design incorporates a black background, a teacup and saucer and steam rising. This bold statement design strongly promotes the use of Fair Trade tea. Sarah will receive a Fair Trade T-shirt and her design will be printed onto t-shirts as advertisements during Fair Trade Fortnight. She will also receive a £5 voucher to spend at ‘A Class Apart’ The panel of three judges from Dinas Powys Fair Trade Group would like to thank all the students for their thoughtful ideas and found all the entries very interesting; second prize went to Jennifer Kerslake and third to James Haworth. James’ tagline, ‘Fairtrade Tea is Tea-riffic’ was a great idea. Both students will receive a £5 voucher. Some other design work was also highly commended by Rhys Lane, Dominic Curtis and Rhiannon Jeffrey all in year 8. The Fair Trade Foundation focus is on the Big Swap when it is hoped that 1,000,001 people will swap a normal product for a fair trade one e.g. bananas, chocolate, biscuits or whatever, but specifically with a focus on tea. Other age groups have been asked to design different things, again on a tea theme, and the intention is to exhibit everyone's work at the Parish Hall on Saturday 6th March. Mrs E Fisher (09/03/2010)

Penarth Town Fairtrade Forum

The AGM of the Penarth Town Fairtrade Forum took place on Friday 5th March and involved several of our pupils in major roles. Hannah Richards and Tomos Evans, both of Year 13, have served on the Forum for the last two years and, as they are now off to University, the members of the meeting, including Lorraine Barrett AM, Cllr Mark Wilson and representatives from local businesses, charities etc, thanked them for their consistent support and hard work over this time. Hannah had been elected as Publicity Officer in the last AGM and has proved to be an excellent ambassador both for the Forum and for the school. The meeting ended with a presentation by two of our Year 10 pupils, Rosa Greenburrows and Ruba Ashraf - both of whom were speaking in public for the first time. They gave an account of the work of the school in supporting the Fairtrade programme and were rewarded by a rousing round of applause for their infomrative and interesting talk. Well done girls - you also were excellent ambassadors for St Cyres School. The photos shows our students with some of the other guests and members at the meeting and Rosa and Ruba delivering their talk. (08/03/2010)

Project: Fair Trade Catwalk

You may have recently seen size zero models and unbelievable creations strutting down the catwalks of London Fashion Week and wondered how the elite fashion world can continue to relate to the needs of the population. As an alternative, on Thursday 27th February at 7.30pm a totally different view of fashion was taking place. Real size models refused to conform to stereotypes and proudly walked the catwalk promoting Fairtrade clothing from a number of manufacturers. Jan Tucker owner of ‘Fair Do’s’ in Canton kindly supplied a wide range of men’s and women’s clothing from her shop as well as accessories like hats, scarves and bags. www.fairdos.com Hannah Richards, year 13 who is publicity officer of the Penarth Fairtrade Forum was the driving force behind The Fairtrade Fashion Show. With help and advice from Mr Clarey, she enrolled Counsellor Mark Wilson, Mrs Margaret Edwards and the ladies of the Women’s Institute and several members of St Cyres School staff to participate in raising awareness of The Big Swap, 22nd February to 7th March. www.fairtrade.org.uk Highlights of the evening included two gorgeous crushed velvet dresses, a range of printed and hand beaded tops and patterned silk skirts. All the models looked fantastic and were well received by the audience with rounds of applause. The show stopper had to be Dan Payne, year 13 who wearing designer boxer shorts from ‘Pants for Poverty’ marched boldly down the catwalk, making the front row smile! During the interval, St Cyres School Choir entertained us with a wonderful performance and The Mayor of Penarth, John Fraser, gave the event a sense of occassion in the beautiful surroundings of The Paget Rooms. Although this was not a fund raising event, but more about promoting awareness, volunteers from Oxfam in Penarth Town were on hand selling Fairtrade products like coffee, tea and chocolate. Mad Hatter's Tea Break

On Saturday 27th February six students from St Cyres School participated in an event at Youldon House, Dinas Powys in support of Fairtrade Fortnight. Tasmin Pickford, Jennifer Ham, John Turingan, Dominique Tsoi, Charlotte and Jessica Woodfield all gave up their Saturday morning to get creative! The task was seemingly simple, 'create the maddest hats possible with the materials provided'. That would normally be no problem for this group of talented students, however, ten wonderful local ladies with their minds set on making Easter Bonnets gave them a bit more of a challenge. Artistic ideas were put on hold so that Conversation, Compromise and Care became the key words to success. Phyllis with her partner Jessica, were the ultimate prizewinners and treated to some Fairtrade chocolate. I would like to thank Sue Hamer from the Dinas Powys Fairtrade Group who organised this event in association with Soul in Dinas. This was a valuable opportunity to socialise across generations and make connections between groups of people who would possibly never meet. The conversation flowed as we exchanged ideas about local places of interest and nattered about craft projects over cups of tea and toast. All of the ‘Mad Hats’ will be on display at Dinas Powys Parish Hall on Saturday 6th March. (05/03/2010)

Consultation Continues with Design Team

Following the series of special assemblies that were held last week, the consultation process on the design of our new school continued today with a series of meetings with each of the Year Councils. The purpose of these meetings was to ask the pupils on each of the Year Councils for their ideas for the new buildings and to find out what facilities they would like to see in the new school. As always, the pupils came up with lots of interesting and exciting ideas and the Design Team were very pleased with the feedback they received from the pupils and they will take away and consider all of the ideas discussed during the day. St Cyres Hockey Results

The Year 9 hockey team recently played in the County Hockey Tournament. The team started well with a victory over Cardiff High School. Rachel Hignett was dominant for St. Cyres with a hatrick. She was well supported by Ellen Mahenthiralingham, Ffion Gould, Chanelle McIlroy and Maryam Chaudhary. The girls then faced a tight match against Ysgol Bro Morgannwg. They managed to contain Rachel and eventually Bro Morgannwg scored despite some good defending from Caomhie Wingren, Sahar Ibrahim, Dana Yee and Ffion Thomas. The girls then lost against Glantaf who were the eventual winners.

The Year 7 hockey team also played Bro Morgannwg in a friendly fixture. This was their first 11 a-side match and both teams played really well. St. Cyres midfield of Naomi Lewis, Amy Morgan, Emily Hill and Isabella Podesta showed real skill at times and did manage to create some attacking opportunities. The attack of Lydia Gardner, Emily Gadsby and Georgia Morgan made some good attacking runs but just couldn’t get the final shot on target. The defence of Chloe Benson, Shauna McManus and Chloe Wathan were solid throughout. The girls have their County Tournament after half term. (10/02/2010)

Elodie Wilton Appeal

In response to a request for help in the Penarth Times a group of 13 pupils from all year groups in the school decided to help raise money to fund a £40,000 operation for 2-year old Elodie Wilton, the daughter of a past pupil who had been diagnosed with cerebral palsy. The operation would dramatically change Elodie's future life and was only available in America. The appeal was so successful that we were able to present Mr and Mrs Wilton with a cheque for £1,000 in a special Year 7 assembly on 5th February. In her thank you speech to the school Mrs Wilton was able to say that Elodie had been accepted for the surgery and the fund currently stood at £23,000 - we wish them well with their future fund-raising. Art, Design & Technology Year 13 Christmas Party

Santa made a visit to St Cyres school just before the end of the December to visit the Year 13 Technology class. Many of the pupils noticed that Santa had in fact lost a lot of weight and was looking much more ‘stream lined’…. Many festive fun games were played to celebrate the Christmas season, musical chairs, and Pin the tail on the Tech teacher to name a few. Santa welcomed staff to sit on his knee and tell him what they would like for Christmas, one ex-member of staff (Mr Andy Duncan) made a special appearance just to give Santa his ‘wish list’. St Cyres Key Skills Success

A special assembly to mark the outstanding success of our Year 10 pupils was called this week as the school received the news that 220 pupils from this year group had passed their Level 2 Key Skills qualification in ICT. What is even more remarkable is that these pupils actually completed this work during Year 9. This Key Skills qualification is an important building block for the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification which is a core part of our curriculum in Year 10 and is studied alongside the usual GCSE qualifications. Pupils are currently completing their Application of Number portfolios and these will be entered later in the term. St Cyres has a strong national reputation for outstanding success in the Advanced Diploma WBQ qualification which is studied by students in our Sixth Form and the indications are, based on these results, that pupils will enjoy the same levels of success in this Intermediate Diploma. The school wishes to congratulate all pupils who received this qualification and we look forward to hearing news of further success from this Year group. (19/01/2010)
